How To Stop Swearing or Cursing as a Christian

If you want to stop yourself from swearing or cursing but don’t really know where to start or you already started the process of not cursing and practicing it every day and you want to be consistent in that, you reached the right page! To be honest, I used to swear a lot before, like every sentence that I say won’t satisfy me unless I said a curse word in it. Becoming a Christian has transformed me into the person I am now. I am still not perfect because I’m also human like you, I do commit mistakes and also tempted all the time. I am here to help you and gives some tips on how you can overcome that and try to be consistent with it.

Our tongue is only a small part of the body but it can hurt someone using just a single word.
“Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.” – James 3:5 NIV

Always remember, when you want to change something in your life, it is a process that takes time. Just because you want to change, doesn’t mean you will get the results right away. Be patient. It also took me a lot of time to manage not to curse anymore.

1. The very first step I suggest is, you have to want to stop yourself. The more motivated you are, the more reason you want to keep this going. I knew some people personally that they said they want to stop cursing yet they only manage to do that in a day or week and eventually, get back to their normal ways of cursing. So just calm down and take your time until you succeed.

2. Second, you need to stay away from people who curse a lot. It’ll be hard for you to stop yourself if you’re with someone who does it normally so it will influence you to do it as well.  Don’t worry about being away from your friends, “No man is an Island”, we all do need friends. The moment you get stronger in your faith in God and able to keep yourself away from cursing even with the influence around you, you can be an example that you can have fun without cursing.  Get a Christian life group in your area where you can share your experiences and also ask for advice on how you can stop cursing as well and hold you accountable in keeping you close to God.
You also need to change your music taste. Most of the most amazing and coolest songs out there are usually the ones that can influence you the most and sadly, they curse like non-stop. Listening to a Christian music station even just once a day or also any songs that are non-explicit or curse-free songs will make you realize, a song doesn’t need to have a curse word in it so that you can enjoy music.

3. Third, know what triggers you to swear or curse and eliminate those bad habits that trigger it one at a time. It’s like trying to get rid of the weeds in your lawn. You cant just cut its leaves on the surface, but you have to dig and take it out from its roots so that it will not grow again or spread more. You also need to pray and meditate in the morning asking for guidance of the Lord to keep you away from sins or temptations.

4. Lastly, the most important reminder that made me successful in stopping myself from cursing because I wanted to please God. Always remember that with our tongues, we praise the Father and our Lord. You cant use the same tongue that praises God and same tongue that also curses people.

“With the tongue, we praise our Lord and Father, and with it, we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.” — James 3:9-10 NIV
